MEL RELIEVED

West Brom boss Pepe Mel breathed a huge sigh of relief after his team managed to a 2-1 win over Swansea City during the weekend. It was the first win he has achieved as the West Brom manager. This has helped him cool down the talk of being sacked after just weeks after being appointed in the role. He was brought in as a replacement for Steve Clark, but the much expected upturn of results did not come immediately. West Brom did look excellent in the 1-1 draw with title chasing Chelsea and Liverpool at home, but they have also suffered defeats as well.

Mel, however, was patient with his team and he made a couple of significant changes for the match against Swansea. This included the inclusion of Stephane Sessegnon, who was influential in the match, amongst many others. After the match, he said that the players must build on this immense victory, which has given them a breathing space with nine matches left in the campaign. They are three points above the relegation zone, but with all the relegation threatened teams picking up points, the effect of this victory has been subdued.

Goalkeeper Ben Foster spoke about the need to maintain stability at the club, as he has called for Mel to be kept in the job.
“Another sacking is probably the last thing we need. There has been a lot of goings on, a lot said in the media, and the (Nicolas) Anelka thing. You don’t pay too much attention to it. We are very happy for the club and Pepe needed that as well. It means a lot to him, it really does,” said Foster. Stephane Sessegnon was on the scoresheet for West Brom, while Youssouf Mulumbu scored the other goal in this remarkable away win.
